How Prop Firms Restrict News Trading
Most prop firms limit what you can do around high-impact economic events — rate decisions, NFP, CPI prints — because the volatility spike can blow through drawdown limits in seconds. The restrictions fall into three buckets:
Green — No restriction: Trade through news freely. No window, no profit cap.
Amber — Window or profit cap: You can't open new trades (or modify existing ones) within a window around the event, or profits from trades opened in the window are capped.
Red — No new trades or prohibited: New positions in the window are blocked, or news trading is banned entirely. Breaching this is typically a hard breach — loss of the account.
